Microsoft released Windows 10 Threshold 2, aka the November Update to the public recently. As reported previously, the company has started working on the next update for Windows 10 already. The company is getting ready to release the first build of the upcoming Windows 10 update, dubbed as Redstone to Insiders. The software giant recently released a cumulative for Windows 10 users, which enrolls Insiders into the “rs1_release” branch, which will be new release branch for the upcoming Redstone builds.</div>

For those unfamiliar with Redstone, it’s expected to be the next major update for Windows 10. Just like Threshold, Redstone will be released in 2 waves – Redstone 1 (RS1) and Redstone (2) in 2016 (to the public). Redstone should introduce new features, as well as user interface improvements. For those wondering, yes, there’s a good chance of the company to release the first build of Redstone to Windows Insiders this year, that means you don’t have to wait for Redstone until 2016.</div>

Our Commitment to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Customers</h2>

At the same time, we know many of these customers continue to rely on Windows 7 for its well understood reliability and compatibility. Windows 7 was designed nearly 10 years ago before any x86/x64 SOCs existed. For Windows 7 to run on any modern silicon, device drivers and firmware need to emulate Windows 7’s expectations for interrupt processing, bus support, and power states- which is challenging for WiFi, graphics, security, and more. As partners make customizations to legacy device drivers, services, and firmware settings, customers are likely to see regressions with Windows 7 ongoing servicing.</div>

We want to help our customers prepare for their Windows 10 upgrade. To do that, we will deliver a list of specific new Skylake devices we will support to run Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. This approach ensures our customers can upgrade now to new devices their employees will love while preparing for a Windows 10 upgrade. We will post this list next week and it will continue to be updated as we work closely with our partners. For the listed systems, along with our OEM partners, we will perform special testing to help future proof customers’ investments, ensure regular validation of Windows Updates with the intent of reducing potential regressions including security concerns, and ensure all drivers will be on Windows Update with published BIOS/UEFI upgrading tools, which will help unlock the security and power management benefits of Windows 10 once the systems are upgraded. We’re grateful to the strong cooperation from our partners to support our customers.</div>

Support Policy Updates for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 Customers</h2>

With Windows 7 now in extended support, we are focused on our commitment to deliver security, reliability, and compatibility to our installed base on their current systems. Redesigning Windows 7 subsystems to embrace new generations of silicon would introduce churn into the Windows 7 code base, and would break this commitment. Thus, today we are clarifying our Windows support policy:</div>

<li style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.1875rem; line-height: 1.8125rem; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">Windows 7 will continue to be supported for security, reliability, and compatibility through January 14, 2020 on previous generation silicon. Windows 8.1 will receive the same support through January 10, 2023. This includes most of the devices available for purchase today by consumers or enterprises.</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.1875rem; line-height: 1.8125rem; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">Going forward, as new silicon generations are introduced, they will require the latest Windows platform at that time for support. This enables us to focus on deep integration between Windows and the silicon, while maintaining maximum reliability and compatibility with previous generations of platform and silicon. For example, Windows 10 will be the only supported Windows platform on Intel’s upcoming “Kaby Lake” silicon, Qualcomm’s upcoming “8996” silicon, and AMD’s upcoming “Bristol Ridge” silicon.</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 1.1875rem; line-height: 1.8125rem; text-rendering: optimizeLegibility;">Through July 17, 2017, Skylake devices on the supported list will also be supported with Windows 7 and 8.1. During the 18-month support period, these systems should be upgraded to Windows 10 to continue receiving support after the period ends. After July 2017, the most critical Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 security updates will be addressed for these configurations, and will be released if the update does not risk the reliability or compatibility of the Windows 7/8.1 platform on other devices.</li>

Telstra, a leading telecommunications and technology company in Australia has 370 Telstra stores across Australia, selling a full range of consumer products from pre- and post-paid mobile phones to wearables, pay-TV and high speed broadband. Given more than half of the company’s service transactions now take place on digital channels, Telstra has introduced a digitally led-customer environment at its flagship Discovery stores in Sydney and Melbourne, that blends online and offline worlds, reaching far beyond the store walls so customers can interact with Telstra when, where and how they choose. This is a big change to the traditional Telstra store, which was very product centric and structured in terms of how the store team interacted with customers, and with backend systems and processes that were cumbersome and added to wait times for shoppers.</div>

Andrew Smith, Telstra’s Director of Retail Operations, says the company went on a “rampant mission” to create a more exciting, immersive and efficient retail environment. There were just two rules: make it simple and make it fast. In other words, any change or new system had to be easy for staff to learn to use. Tasks also had to be able to be completed in less than three minutes.</div>

Leveraging Windows 10, the Telstra stores offer a mix of highly interactive features, engaging digital content displays, and an ever-changing range of the latest products and services. A key change was the move away from traditional desktop PCs to Windows tablets, so their retail advisors can access all the systems and operational tools to complete a full customer interaction – from exploring products and services to completing the activation, payments, capturing the signature and emailing the receipt and contract – all without leaving the customer’s side. Telstra advisors also have mobile phones so that customers can get back into touch with the exact person who served them – not just whoever happens to answer the store’s fixed line.</div>

While the concept of a mobile workstation is not new, what’s different about the Windows 10 mobile workstation is it offers a more secure and automatic log-in with Windows Hello*, unlocking the Windows device by recognizing the retail associate’s face. Throughout the day retail associates can seamlessly transition from a mobile touch-tablet mode, to a traditional desktop mode, and even project to a larger display with Continuum, which adjusts your experience to match the activity, device and display. For instance, let’s say the associate wanted to show off a new living room set that is not in the store. It’s really difficult to show that on 5” screen. The Windows 10 device can “dock” seamlessly to a larger screen so the customer can see it in greater detail. The device can also easily dock to peripheral stations to access receipt printers, EAS deactivators, flatbed scanners, scales and more.  This enables retail partners to leverage one set of devices and experiences for new and engaging retail experiences, as well as accomplishing their traditional transaction workflow.</div>
