For an Xbox One exclusive. Basically, Microsoft is in no mood to admit their mistake of launching Rise of the Tomb Raider on the same day as a certain other game.
One that goes by the name of Fallout 4.
While both are great titles on their own, this latest Tomb Raider game was reviewed as a really good game, in many ways better than the previous title in the series. And it was also a console exclusive for the Xbox One.
And it pretty much bombed.
Microsoft has not provided any sales figures, and the NPD numbers that reveal retail sales have not even mentioned Rise of the Tomb Raider in the top ten.
But according to Games Marketing Head Aaron Greenberg, the game put up a good performance:
“It launched in a very crowded window, but it has done well. A lot of people bought both Fallout 4 and Tomb Raider. At the same time we know a lot of people may have bought Tomb Raider and wait on Fallout or bought Fallout and waited on Tomb Raider.”
Point being, why launch it at the same time the much hyped Fallout 4 was debuting?
A lot was riding on this newest Tomb Raider adventure, and judging by the looks of things, this new game basically came and went. Fans can still buy it, of course, but it’s release might not have been what Microsoft wanted by making it an Xbox One exclusive.
That being, to move more console units.
Still, a PC version of Rise of the Tomb Raider is tracking for launch very soon, by some counts this coming March. So not a six months’ gap as is usually the case for console exclusives like this.
Says a little about the subpar sales performance, this, does it not?
